WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU CUT
Tree Removal in Issaquah, Wa
Issaquah’s lush landscape is central to its identity, and the City’s tree preservation code (IMC 18.812) reflects this commitment. Whether you are on Squak Mountain, in the Highlands, or down in the valley, Western Washington Tree Service ensures your project meets all city requirements while keeping your property safe and beautiful.
Is Your Tree "Significant" or "Landmark"?
Issaquah regulates trees based on species and size. Before removing a tree, we help you determine its classification:
Significant Trees: Any healthy tree 6 inches or larger in diameter (DBH). (Note: Alder and Cottonwood trees are considered significant at 8 inches or larger).
Landmark Trees: Any healthy tree 30 inches or larger in diameter. These are high-priority for retention and always require a full Tree Permit and a professional arborist assessment.
Annual & 5-Year Removal Allowances
For developed single-family lots, Issaquah allows a specific number of removals without a formal permit fee, using a cost-free Tree Removal Form:

Key Regulations & Requirements
Since the City of Issaquah maintains a permanent log of your property’s tree removals, we perform a thorough records check to secure your eligibility before any work begins
Tree Density Minimum: Every lot in Issaquah must maintain a minimum tree density (typically 2 significant trees per 5,000 sq. ft.). If removal puts you below this, replanting is mandatory.
The 1:1 Replacement Rule: Most removals require at least one replacement tree that provides equal or greater canopy coverage at maturity.
Hazard & Nuisance Trees: Trees that are high-risk or damaging structures may be removed via a permit, but the city requires a TRAQ Certified Arborist Report to waive the standard removal limits.
Trees in greenbelts, steep slopes, or Native Growth Protection Easements (NGPE) are strictly protected and require specialized "Critical Area" review.
